JR / LOS SURCOS DE LA CIUDAD / SPAIN Comments | Jul 28 2008

JR / LOS SURCOS DE LA CIUDAD / SPAINby JR

JRs most recent project in Spain I love the concept, the stories art and film! ”In it, tradition, the ancient town and its inhabitants history are gathered with the passing of time marks. They are “the town faces” and “the facades of its characters”.In each wrinkles of its inhabitants and in each chink of its buildings, everyday life has been printed as well as longings and illusions of population and the town to build future.”

If you are unfamiliar with JRs work here’s a quick bio I posted before

Photographs By Ryan McGinley Comments | Jun 24 2008

Ryan McGinleyRyan McGinleyRyan McGinleyRyan McGinleyRyan McGinleyRyan McGinleyRyan McGinleyRyan McGinley has a unique style in his photographs. They are just raw, bare bones and almost look accidental or amateurish. Seeing that the majority of his subjects are nude oddly adds to the subjects story being told in the photos. McGinley, at the age of 24 was the youngest artist to have a solo show at New Yorks Whitney Museum of American Art. He graduated from Parsons School of Design B.F.A. Graphic Design… It seems that almost everyone in the art and design world went to Parsons

Terry Richardson Does Belvedere Comments | May 31 2008

TerryDoesBelvedereTerryDoesBelvedere

Word on the street Terry Richardson is doin’ work on the new Belvedere Vodka campaign. A few samples are above. One of the best aspects is how even for such a large scale campaign spanning print, web and TV Terry is able to keep shit legit carrying over his artistic style of in you face photography and meshing it into a more commercial form of photography. Terry mentioned “They really allowed me to put my own spin on the campaign.” For more information on Terry or the campaign check the Belvedere site and look in Discover Luxury Reborn where they have a dedicated section for Terry Richardson, Vincent Gallo and RZA.

Justice - Stress / JR Comments | May 04 2008

The new Justice Stress video which seems to be filmed in a Banlieue of Paris is just crazy. Some people I know find it too violent but i felt it generally suited the sound of the song as well as it being filmed well. It has the feeling that it was more of a documentary of the days events and a film crew just happens to be following the group. Because of the location of the video it reminded me of the photography/street artist JR. All of his projects are social and cultural commentaries of life. The following was taken from his site.

JR is 25 and he owns the biggest art gallery in the world. He exhibits freely in the streets of the world, catching the attention of people who are not the museum visitors.

His work mixes Art and Act, talks about commitment, beauty, freedom, identity and limit. He is an artivist, extract of artist and activist.

After a tour of European Street Art (Carnet de Rue, 2005, Free Press ed.), he did in 2005 Portrait of a generation, portraits of the suburban “freaks” in the Bosquets (Montfermeil) and la Forestière (Clichy-sous-Bois) ghettos that he posted in the bourgeois districts of Paris (Portrait d’une génération, 2006, Alternatives ed.).

With a 28 millimetres lens, the photos are taken very close to the person. He uses black and white to differentiate from the advertising colour aggression.

In March 2007, together with Marco, he did Face 2 Face, the biggest illegal photo exhibition ever: eight Palestinian and Israeli cities, and the Security fence / Separation wall on both sides. They posted the huge portraits of Israelis and Palestinians face to face. Through this project, we showed that he can break the limits of possible (Face 2 Face, 2007, Aletrantives ed.).

With a 28 millimetre lens, portraits of people doing faces, huge posters and anonymity, JR changes some basic rules. The photographer is hidden, does not give interpretations and leaves the space empty for an encounter. As people are asked not to smile but to make faces for the portrait, they are not subjects, but actors. As the portrait is not seen in a place where people go to see Art, the passer-by is required for an interpretation. By the surprise and the question it raises, man can revisit his thinking habits and free himself from stereotypes and prejudice. This is what JR is working on. Raising questions…

The 3rd stage of the 28 millimeters project - Women Are Heroes - has already led him to Africa in post-conflicting zones to shoot the women with who he wishes to share painful stories and to testify of their desire to live. Their portraits were already pasted in Sierra-leone and in Liberia. In 2008-2009, JR will develop this project in India and in Asia.

Terry Richardson Is Everywhere Comments | Mar 12 2008

If you are alive right now you would have seen Terry Richardson’s photography. Whether you’ve known it or not its everywhere.

Terry Richardson

Terry Richardson is an international celebrity as well as one of the most prolific and compelling photographers of his generation. Known for his uncanny ability to cut to the raw essence of whomever appears before his lens, Mr. Richardson’s vision is at once humorous, tragic, often beautiful, and always provocative.

Born in New York City and raised in Hollywood, Terry began photographing his environment while attending Hollywood High School and playing in a punk rock band. And he hasn’t stopped shooting since. Mr. Richardson has lensed campaigns for such clients as Gucci, Sisley, Miu Miu, Levi’s, Eres, Chloe, APC, Carolina Herrera, Nike, and Kenneth Cole. Terry’s editorial work has appeared in magazines such as Vogue, French Vogue, British Vogue, Japanese Vogue, I-D, Dazed and Confused, GQ, Harper’s Bazaar, W, and Purple, as well as a host of worldwide
publications too numerous to mention.
Mr. Richardson is also a favorite among famous actors and musicians. His impressive list of subjects includes Daniel Day Lewis, Faye Dunaway, Leonardo DiCaprio, Vincent Gallo, Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs, Sharon Stone, Mickey Rourke, Jay Z, 50 Cent, Kanye West, Mena Suvari, Johnny Knoxville, Nicolas Cage, Dennis Hopper, Maggie Gylenhall, Karl Lagerfeld, Pharell Williams, Chloe Sevigny, and many others.

Terry has been the subject of numerous group shows as well as one man shows at such esteemed galleries as The Alleged Gallery in New York City, The Shine Gallery in London, Gallery Emanuel Perriton in Paris, The Parco Gallery in Japan, and most recently, Deitch Projects also in New York City.

Many books have also been published throughout the span of Terry’s career. His first book, entitled Hysteric Glamour, was published in 1998; this was followed by Son of Bob in 1999, Feared by Men Desired by Women in 2000, Too Much in 2001, and 2004 saw the publishing of both Terryworld and Kibosh.

Terry has recently made the transition from still photography to film as well, helming music videos for Primal Scream, Death in Vegas, and Whirlwind Heat in addition to television commercials for Tommy Hilfiger and the internet company Wanadoo. His feature film debut “Son of a Bitch,” is currently in development and is sure to captivate audiences with its stark portrayal of a father and son’s struggle with love and hate.

Whatever the medium, Terry Richardson continues to prove that he is a true American Original.

Hedi Slimane Comments | Mar 12 2008

Hedi Slimane

I know this interview with Hedi Slimane is old but I recently found it on. It gaves some basic insight into such a respected designer who left Dior in 2007. Being known for furniture design, fragrances, store design, and photography, Slimane is noted for the slim silhouette of his menswear. Anyhow here’s some more insight quoted by Kanye West ”Hedi Slimane is not even a real person. I’m saying that in the most positive way. Saying that he’s not even a human being. Hedi Slimane is truly a god. Bow in the presence of greatness.

Hedi also has a photo diary located here ->www.hedislimane.com/diary/index.php

The photos are nothing less than captivating so instead of me trying to explain their meaning, or what makes the composition work just go look and form your own opinion.
