Jeremy Scott has his new line out, Opulence and the pieces definitely reflect that. Each piece reflects luxury items including the use of credit cards, Rolls-Royce, personal librarys, grandfather clocks, fur animal print and so on.
Jeremy Scott attended the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn he established his label in Paris before returning to America. Celebs love his creative, comical and sometimes flamboyant patterns, some who have been known to wear his creations are Paris Hilton, Madonna, Lindsay Lohan, Kanye West and his good friends Cory Kennedy and the Ed Banger Crew.
Beautiful Losers celebrates the spirit behind one of the most influential cultural movements of a generation. In the early 1990’s a loose-knit group of like minded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the “establishment” art world, this group, and the subcultures they sprang from, have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture. Starring a selection of artists who are considered leaders within this culture, Beautiful Losers focuses on the telling of personal stories…speaking to themes of what happens when the outside becomes “in” as it explores the creative ethos connecting these artists and today’s youth.
Its the summer of 1994, and the streets of New York are pulsing with hip hop and wafting with the sweet aroma of marijuana. The newly-inaugurated mayor, Rudolph Giuliani, is only beginning to implement his anti-fun initiatives against crimes like noisy portable radio, graffiti and public drunkenness. The Wackness centers upon a troubled high school student named Luke Shapiro (Josh Peck)a teenage pot dealer who forms a friendship with Dr. Jeffrey Squires (Ben Kingsley), a psychiatrist and kindred lost soul. When the doctor proposes Luke trade him weed for therapy sessions, the two begin to explore both New York City and their own depression.Propelled by an exuberant hip hop score, The Wackness captures the spell of 1994–a time of pagers, not cell phones; a time when Tupac and Biggie were alive but Kurt Cobain had just died. Funny and moving, The Wackness is an offbeat tale of two lost souls stumbling towards maturity.
It was good enough I am contemplating seeing it again. So everyone should at least see it once. The Wackness dBRAP!!
I’m not one to wear jewelery, on occasion maybe but not on a regular basis at least until I found the work by Philip Crangi(it seems currently his site is down).
“It’s really hard to put pearls on a man,” says jeweler Philip Crangi moving over to a display case of his own designs, “but let’s try this.” Leading his hand through delicate, web-like pendants, his fingers come to rest on a small, embellished black pearl. He affixes the bauble to his ear and turns to a mirror. “Oh, yeah,” he smiles, “that works.”
I’ve been a HUGE fan of Os Gemeos ever since I got into graffiti and street art. When I was able to find this interview with the twins at their Too Far Too Close show in the Deitch Projects space. The Show runs from June 28 to August 09, 2008 18 Wooster Street, New York and is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 12PM to 6PM!
Os Gemeos is famous for their their use of the famous Brazilian style labeled pixacao. They grew up in São Paulo, Brazil and are self taught artists drawing influences from their surrounds and Brazilian culture and history. One of the most prominent aspects I found of their style is the wonderful use of space, utilizing what city scape’s have to offer. Their use of vivid colour and exuberant patterns within their murals draw attention and really makes their work stand out.
If you are not familiar with Os Gemeos’s work here are a few photo examples.
I’ve recently been loving the publication/blog Refinery 29. They are out of NYC and cater to Fashion, Travel, Music, Deisgn oriented people. They have a LA edition as well. The site has everything from Shop directories per city as well as online video content. They are “devoted to seeking out the people, products, and ideas that set the bar for originality and exceptionally, season after season.” Which is great!! Since I first came across Refinery 29 i have notices significant content updates and site improvements which really emphasizes their whole “forward thinking” ideals.
I would defiantly mark Refinery 29 as a bi-weekly stop on your online browsing.
The Virgins, a band that sounds very UK…ish? I think so but their from NYC and started back in 2005. In my opinion just ahead of the whole scene in America. There good, easy indie rockish new wave (if that genre still exists) soul. Non the less it’s great music that will last. Really, just listen to The Virgins and enjoy the sounds. They remind me slightly of the UK band Mystery Jets… does anyone else think so?
Ryan McGinley has a unique style in his photographs. They are just raw, bare bones and almost look accidental or amateurish. Seeing that the majority of his subjects are nude oddly adds to the subjects story being told in the photos. McGinley, at the age of 24 was the youngest artist to have a solo show at New Yorks Whitney Museum of American Art. He graduated from Parsons School of Design B.F.A. Graphic Design… It seems that almost everyone in the art and design world went to Parsons…
