Newport Beach Orange County

Alex Knost is one of the most influential surfers these days, has ridden the comp. circuit seeing little point in them. So recently he has been doing this thing in Newport Beach and is just happening to be changing the way we all look at surfing.

He is also in the band The Japanese Motors which are very surf/beach cultured sound and based out of Costa Mesa. It also happens that Costa Mesa has this awesome club called Avalon Bar which we hit up last friday.Ye, check it for sure if your in the area.

Bloc Party

On Monday Aug. 18 ‘08 Bloc Party announced that this Thursday, the 21 their new album Intimacy was going to be released online and in stores this winter. The interview with Gordon Moakes with Pitchfork talks about what prompted the early and quick release considering that the album was mastered only about a week ago. With the intent of the record to be released winter 08/09 having the album drop today is a perfect example of the groups dedication to the album.

Canada and France are winning music

August 20th, 2008 by Jordan

Canada and France are winning

There have been a lot of collabs appearing recently between Canadian musicians and Parisians. If it had to be summed up what the outcome of these collaborations are it would be winning music. Two examples of French and Canadian musical talent meshing is Chrome Knight which is Surkin’s White Knight with a new vocal track done by Dave 1 of Chromeo and DatA’s Rapture ft. Sebastian Grainger of the once DFA 1979 and Sebastian Grainger & the Mountains.

Do you know of any other revolutionary Canada / French collaborations that I have not mentioned ? If so let me know.

V is for Van She

August 11th, 2008 by Jordan

Van She

On August number 9 the debut full length from Van She is being released. If you loved The Teenagers Reality Check, I would defiantly recommend checking out Van She’s album V.

The similarities lie with the 80’s popish synths and drums.Van She hail from Sydney Australia and have been making amazing tracks since ‘05. Listening to their album I can hear influences from Nirvana, U2 and Perl Jam. For being a Psychedelic / Shoegaze / Techno (according to their myspace page) band its great hearing classic influences twisted into a more modern shape. Accordingly Modular describes Van She as a “new band from Sydney fresh on ideas, fresher than Flavor Flav, fresh like coriander, fresher than the Fresh Prince.” - Amazing.

Along with their band two members also do remixes of your fab. fav. groups and producers under the name Van She Technologic… here is some songs off their new album V.

Nostalgic Electro

August 1st, 2008 by Jordan

nostalgicElectro

I’m straight up saying that its a known fact that Nostalgic Electro is now in. With my previous post about what is next with electro, these 3 tunes will now prove this theory even further. They are by NYC based Chew Fu who is a contributer for Palms Out Sound, Kissy Sell Out a UK producer who has a show on BBC1 and the Parisian Ed Bangin producer sebastiAn.

Ben E. King - Stand By Me (Chew Fu RMX)

NightSwimming - R.E.M(Kissy Sell Out Bmore Re-Edit)

Baba O’Riely - The Who (sebastiAn Remix)

What is next in music, there’s only so many nostalgic tunes that deserve to be brought back from the dead, when we exhaust these what will we do…?Is electro going to last for ever or fade out soon? The music industry is blending every other style of music and its getting pretty ridiculous so why not just go all out? What will it be replaced with? Folkno (folk & techno), Op-unk (opra & punk), hip-tic (hip-hop & celtic)?

Through A Keyhole and on to disco

July 29th, 2008 by Jordan

Le Castle Vania

Le Castle Vania has some killer tunes and these remixs are for sure some of them. Hailing from ALT. URB mentioned him as one of the next 100 and he has be praised by both Fader and Nylon. Through A Keyhole and Zero Machine(orig. a Smashing Pumpkins tune) are dirty, heavy and disco. Also check his side project Lies In Discuise with Blake Miller from Moving Units. How much more legit can you get when your have a saying like”I LOVE YOU BUT I’VE CHOSEN DISCO”?

The Lovely Feathers

July 10th, 2008 by Jordan

The Lovely Feathers

I’ve been lucky enough to have seen The Lovely Feathers multiple times years ago when they were touring with Metric and playing Last Gang Records release parties for the likes of MSTRKRFT (previous post). I haven’t heard anything from them in a while and have continuously been listening to their energetic, fun infused melodic tunes on and off for the last 3 years. When I saw them with out a doubt they were one of the most energetic enthusiastic groups I have ever seen live. (the guitar player actually fell off stage!) For a reminder on how everyone should still be listening to one of the best Quebecois bands around, or if they are no longer around in the past here is a few bangers to keep ya interested. All of their songs are so good I could only narrow it down to these three. The Lovely Feathers Myspace | Home Page
