Muxtape.com Comments | May 14 2008

MuxTape

A while ago a digital version of everyones beloved mixtapes was released as Muxtape.com. Muxtape.com is a side project developed by Justin Ouellette who works for VimeoMuxtape and is based on the concept of old school mixtapes. I enjoy the idea so much, its great to listen to to find new music or if you don’t have a playlist of yours on hand. From a design standpoint the user interface is fantastic and its just a clean simple effective design. Onto my next point, YOU MAKE YOUR OWN MIXTAPES and store them online giving everyone access to listen to your favorite songs.

Check out my MuxTape at jshaw3.muxtape.com . It will be changing quite frequently most likely.

FITC And Function 13 And G.R.L. Comments | May 10 2008

GRL Toronto Pixel Gallery

I was unable to make it to FITC this year in Toronto, I am going to get there some time though. Anyways Evan Roth and G.R.L. were one of the speakers and had some stuff for sale at Function 13 as well as having an installation of the Graffiti Analysis at Pixel Gallery. If your interested more in Graffiti Analysis see a previous post I did when they exhibited at MoMa. I was just super pumped when I found this photo of G.R.L bombin’ the CN Tower, so legit! Love it!

Justice - Stress / JR Comments | May 04 2008

The new Justice Stress video which seems to be filmed in a Banlieue of Paris is just crazy. Some people I know find it too violent but i felt it generally suited the sound of the song as well as it being filmed well. It has the feeling that it was more of a documentary of the days events and a film crew just happens to be following the group. Because of the location of the video it reminded me of the photography/street artist JR. All of his projects are social and cultural commentaries of life. The following was taken from his site.

JR is 25 and he owns the biggest art gallery in the world. He exhibits freely in the streets of the world, catching the attention of people who are not the museum visitors.

His work mixes Art and Act, talks about commitment, beauty, freedom, identity and limit. He is an artivist, extract of artist and activist.

After a tour of European Street Art (Carnet de Rue, 2005, Free Press ed.), he did in 2005 Portrait of a generation, portraits of the suburban “freaks” in the Bosquets (Montfermeil) and la Forestière (Clichy-sous-Bois) ghettos that he posted in the bourgeois districts of Paris (Portrait d’une génération, 2006, Alternatives ed.).

With a 28 millimetres lens, the photos are taken very close to the person. He uses black and white to differentiate from the advertising colour aggression.

In March 2007, together with Marco, he did Face 2 Face, the biggest illegal photo exhibition ever: eight Palestinian and Israeli cities, and the Security fence / Separation wall on both sides. They posted the huge portraits of Israelis and Palestinians face to face. Through this project, we showed that he can break the limits of possible (Face 2 Face, 2007, Aletrantives ed.).

With a 28 millimetre lens, portraits of people doing faces, huge posters and anonymity, JR changes some basic rules. The photographer is hidden, does not give interpretations and leaves the space empty for an encounter. As people are asked not to smile but to make faces for the portrait, they are not subjects, but actors. As the portrait is not seen in a place where people go to see Art, the passer-by is required for an interpretation. By the surprise and the question it raises, man can revisit his thinking habits and free himself from stereotypes and prejudice. This is what JR is working on. Raising questions…

The 3rd stage of the 28 millimeters project - Women Are Heroes - has already led him to Africa in post-conflicting zones to shoot the women with who he wishes to share painful stories and to testify of their desire to live. Their portraits were already pasted in Sierra-leone and in Liberia. In 2008-2009, JR will develop this project in India and in Asia.

Vimeo - Streaming HD Comments | May 03 2008

I recently saw that Vimeo now supports streaming HD. I believe it was Stage6 that I heard supported streaming HD but Vimeo has executed it well. A great feature is the ability to turn on and off the HD quality to allow quicker buffering times. Anyways, what better way to preview it than watch a video of one of the illustrations on their site be developed. Prints of the finished illustration can be bought here.Science Machine from Chad Pugh on Vimeo. Also there’s a video The Wind From Death Valley which may display a little better the amusingness of HD.The Wind of Death Valley - HD from Jon Rawlinson on Vimeo. It seems that you can only stream HD from the Vimeo site and not the embed. Huh…
